Why You Need To Spend Time With People Doing Better Than You
I am so happy that you clicked on this post.
Why?
The title might appear harsh at first glance, but hear me out on this one.
When I say 'BETTER' I'm not talking in the sense of them actually being better than you are.
Better doesn't mean, stronger, wealthier, more successful.
Or at least not in this post it doesn't.
Here's what I mean.
There's a great quote out there which says
Sound scary?
I know that the first time I read this quote, I was a little freaked out. I started asking what this actually meant about my life?
So here's some examples to explain it in real terms - if you hang around with 5 millionaires, you'll be the 6th BUT if you hang around with 5 people living in debt, you'll also be the 6th.
Don't fall into the trap!
Now, this doesn't mean that the people in your life are to BLAME for how your life has turned out. This quote isn't giving you a free pass to blame the people around you for the life you are currently living.
But what it does mean, is that the people around you create a certain energy and you are picking up on that energy.
Stick with me on this.
Did you know, that women who are around each other for long enough, can actually end up syncing up with their menstrual cycles. Meaning, that a mother and her daughters can all end up getting their period in the same week every month!
So, if you are someone who is not very self-motivated or is lacking in self discipline and you choose to hang around people doing LESS than you. Eventually you'll end up doing less!
Today, I went for a run with 4 men. All 4 of them were running faster than me and I could hear my voice saying
"I'm not enjoying this"
Why was that? Because I didn't like being the so called 'slow' one at the back of the line.
So, next week I could say, I'm not going to run with them again because I'm the slower one OR I can flip the script and choose to go running with them again because I am the slower one.
But training with them every week, I will slowly get faster, fitter and lighter on my feet because I am pushing myself to level up.
Sitting at home and doing nothing won't make me a faster runner and it won't get me anywhere near my goals.
Are you trying to lose weight?
This is a common goal for a lot of people, particularly now summer is here.
Maybe losing weight have felt challenging in the past? Maybe it brings up a lot of negative feelings? Maybe, you are surrounded by the wrong people?
I've found before, that whenever I have focused on being healthier, I always have a whole load of people pipe up and ask me why?
All these people are loving, some are family and some are friends but the reason they ask why, is because they don't want to achieve the same goal. And in there lies the problem!
Had I allowed their voices to get so loud, I would never have achieved my goal. I made sure I did two things:
Get clear on what the goal is I wanted to achieve
Surrounded myself with people doing the same and MORE.
Do you need to make this change?
Here are some quick journal prompts you can ask yourself to see who you are surrounding yourself with and if their energy is serving you.
Who are the 5 people you spend the most time with? (Family, friends, partner, kids, work colleagues)
What about their lives do you like / enjoy / wish you had more of?
What goals do you want to achieve? Have any of the 5 named above achieved this or similar?
Who in your life is doing more of what you want to do? (If you can't think of anyone, name people you could find that can support you, for example, a PT)
How can you spend more time with them?
Final note
This post is NOT about cutting people off in your life or never seeing them again.
It's about prioritising you and your goals by finding the people who are doing more of what you want and learning from them.
We pick up on the energy of the people around us, and if you are around them long enough, you might just become them. Think on that x
