New Year, New Me? No thanks!
Who said that January HAD to be the month to start going full speed ahead? Why does it have to be the month where we all set and go for our goals?
I don't know about you, but I actually find January to be one of the more stressful months, and for two reasons:
We've just had Christmas and New Year, and that build up alone is exhausting. We all overspend, overindulge, and mostly do sod all in December, so it's likely that we'll feel unmotivated and exhausted come January 1st.
There is so much hype around a new year starting, and the realistic truth is, most people won't achieve the goals they set.
New Year, New Me is a label we all give ourselves because we feel we have to!
Maybe you are someone who wants to see big, positive changes in your life and that's more than ok. I just think it's important to go about it in the right way.
Remember whose life this is!
Time is a funny thing, and we have popped so many meanings onto a lot of it. How many of you wait until Monday to start your new diet, or maybe you wait for a new month to get up an hour earlier, or maybe you just wait until the new year to start again?
Because of this way of working, a lot of us postpone starting goals until a specific day, in the hope that it will make it easier, or more likely to achieve said goal.
I want you to remember that this is YOUR life and you have to be the one who decides how to live it. Maybe you don't want to set goals (for whatever reason), or maybe you want to start a new hobby on a Wednesday? Don't follow other people so aimlessly through life, because it looks like they have it together. When you start living a life that truly makes you feel happy, feel energised, and feel alive, that's when things feel easier.
So what about January?
I have set goals for this new year, both big and small, both fun and serious, and yet a lot of them, I won't be starting this month. Why you may ask?
December for me is a busy month, but also a wind down month, and so when I get to the new year, I'm not always feeling my best. I love to join a goal setting workshop to help guide me on my plans for the new year, but that also opens me up to a lot of reflection on moments that haven't gone so well in the past 12 months.
This can leave me feeling deflated and slightly lacking in confidence, and my ability to achieve said goal.
So what am I doing differently in 2023?
I am focusing only on small, fun, and achievable goals. I am making the month of January all about rest, reset, and reflection. I haven't made any huge changes in my habits or daily routine, I am just focusing on starting this year feeling happy.
Where people commonly go wrong
In past years, I have tried to change too much, too fast in January all on the reliance of motivation to get me through, and every time I fell short. Sound familiar?
When you try to change too much, too fast, you are likely to overwhelm yourself. Why not use this first month of 2023 to have fun and play around with fun goals?
You might just see better results come February!
How are you going to make January more fun and relaxing?
