Be your own Windkeeper

“How do you expect me to grow, if you won’t let me blow”

Ok, for anyone who doesn’t know me, I am obsessed with the TV show Friends! Not only do I quote it but I link it to everything in life. So it felt only right that I linked this post as it fitted in so well to how I am feeling.

Now let’s jump to Season 2, episode 19 “The One Where Eddie Won’t Go”. We see Monica and Phoebe share a book called 'Be your own Windkeeper', a book based on empowering women to be more in control of their needs when in a relationship.

So how does this link to what I am trying to say?

As women, we are raised to be strong and independent whilst also seeking out that rich man to support us and I' not sure what you think, but to me, one counteracts the other. Either I am strong and independent or I want a man to take care of me?

Strong women are knocked back in a lot of areas in life because of the expectations society has placed on us. One minute we are housewives, there to have the children and run the house. Next minute we are expected to keep doing all of that AND have a full time job, to help pay the ever rising cost of living. Women are ridiculed for having kids and ridiculed for not having kids. Women are judged for being stay at home Mum’s and judged for being working Mum’s. Basically we are judged no matter what we do!

Now, some more words from Rachel Green

“I don’t have to apologise”

That’s right! You do not have to apologise for the life you decide to live whatever that looks like. Have kids or don’t have kids, have a job or don’t have a job, be loud and proud or quiet and happy. Whatever version of you you decide to be, make it the best damn version possible! Be YOUR own Windkeeper!

You have to stop letting other people steal your wind and start taking action towards that which makes you happy. You don’t need to justify it, you don’t need to explain it, just do it because you want to, end of!

Life is so precious because we only get to do it once, there is no dress rehearsal, we are all on a timer which could end at any moment and I know you don’t want to get to the end of yours and regret playing small.

It’s not going to be easy, it’s going to be really hard, but keep going no matter what.

Now, I know this book in particular might be fictional but the words from Friends still stand true. Don’t let men, women or anyone else steal your wind. This is your life and you have to be the one living it.
